Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has renamed the newly completed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after Prof. Nnenna Oti in recognition of her role during the 2023 governorship election in the state.
The facility, now officially known as the “Prof. Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal,” was renamed to honour the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who served as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer during the contentious 2023 Abia governorship election.
Prof. Oti gained national attention after insisting on due process and transparency during the collation of results, particularly amid controversies surrounding figures from Obingwa Local Government Area. Her refusal to endorse disputed results delayed the final declaration process but eventually led to the announcement of Alex Otti as winner of the election.
The renaming of the transport hub has since generated widespread reactions, with supporters describing it as a symbolic reward for courage, accountability and commitment to democratic principles.
The Umuahia Central Bus Terminal is one of the flagship transport infrastructure projects of the Otti administration aimed at centralising transport operations and modernising commuter services within the state capital.
Speaking during earlier inspections of the project, Governor Otti said the terminal was designed to function as a one-stop transport hub integrating road and rail transportation while improving orderliness and commuter convenience in Umuahia.
The terminal is expected to host multiple transport operators and eventually replace scattered motor parks across the city as part of broader urban renewal efforts by the Abia State Government.
