Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has sparked mixed reactions after calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide financial support for artistes in the country.
The rapper made the appeal while reacting to a post by President Tinubu on X about his meeting in Paris with entertainment and media executive, Vincent Bolloré of the Bolloré Group.
Odumodublvck urged the President to go beyond acknowledging the global recognition brought to Nigeria by its entertainment industry and provide financial backing for artistes.
He suggested that government funding could help artistes avoid disputes with record labels and create opportunities for upcoming and underground musicians.
The request has generated mixed reactions from social media users. Some criticised the rapper for asking for government funds, while others supported his call for greater government investment in the creative industry.
Responding to his critics, Odumodublvck argued that artistes rarely benefit from government support compared with workers and businesses in other sectors.
He said he had not seen a Nigerian artiste receive government funding to produce an album, despite the contribution of musicians and other entertainers to Nigeria's international image.
The rapper's appeal has also drawn attention because of reports that he previously turned down payment to perform at a Tinubu campaign event.
