British actor Tim Curry, famed for his unforgettable roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the original television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, has died at the age of 80.
Curry died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, according to his longtime manager, Marcia Hurwitz. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
The actor rose to international fame with his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a role he first originated in the stage production The Rocky Horror Show in 1973.
He later became known to a new generation of audiences for playing Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It. His other notable credits included Clue, Legend, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and The Three Musketeers.
Curry also enjoyed a distinguished stage career, earning three Tony Award nominations for his performances in Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Spamalot. He won a Daytime Emmy Award for his voice performance as Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Hollywood colleagues and fans have since paid tribute to the versatile performer, whose career spanned stage, film, television, music and voice acting.
