US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for international regulation of artificial intelligence, saying the United States will oppose any global framework aimed at controlling the technology.
Trump made the position known while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
He said the US “totally rejects” what he described as a global effort to control artificial intelligence, arguing that new regulations could hinder the development of the technology.
Trump also announced that US government documents would begin referring to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence,” saying the word “artificial” makes the technology sound fake.
His remarks came as leaders from more than 20 countries called for binding safety measures for advanced AI, warning that the rapid development of the technology could outpace efforts to manage its risks.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for dialogue between the United States and China on the future of AI, saying countries with the greatest AI capabilities have a responsibility to establish channels for cooperation, transparency and trust.
