United States President Donald Trump has welcomed Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Kayode Are, amid renewed efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations between both countries.
Ambassador Are officially presented his Letter of Credence to President Trump at the Oval Office in Washington, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s envoy to the United States. The development followed his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier in 2026.
Reacting to the development, the Civil Society Organisations on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI) described Are’s appointment as a strategic move capable of deepening cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in key sectors including security, healthcare, education, aviation and trade.
The organisation, through its Director-General, Kunle Yusuff, noted that Are’s background in intelligence, diplomacy and national security places him in a strong position to advance Nigeria’s interests in Washington. It also commended the US government for facilitating his diplomatic resumption.
Observers say the reception of the Nigerian envoy signals improving relations between Abuja and Washington following months of diplomatic tensions over security concerns and US policy statements on Nigeria. Recent engagements between both countries have increasingly focused on counterterrorism cooperation, economic partnerships and regional stability in West Africa.
